E-mail to Anupama Chopra.. Film Critic and Book Author

Subject : Disagree with your review in Hindustan Times on "Rowdy Rathore"

Dear Madam

A very good day to you.

My name is Kaizad Patel and i am a resident of Mumbai. I am regular follower of your column "100 before you are out" in Mumbai Mirror and i also read your review on the movies which releases on Friday. I didnt yet got time to see your show on Star World " The front Row". I am a big movie buff and i love to watch movies, more of Bollywood movies and also good Hollywood movies too.

The content which you cover in your column " 100 before you are out " is very unique and something new , i always glue my eyes firstly on that column on every Monday morning and then i surf the other news. I am not a journalist but writing is my passion and since my college days i am been following all the senior most journalist and column writers from Sir Pritish Nandy , Sir Suhel Seth . I am also your big fan and i follow your columns regularly.

I have seen one thing very common in all the critics columns , the weightage nowadays is given more to parallel films which are obviously doing very well and are being premiered in film festivals across worldwide. I appreciate the subject and the content of these films but these films will definitely do very well with matured audience who don't like to add up a spice in their life. Today i saw your review in Hindustan Times on "Rowdy Rathore" which i dont agree with you. Every Movie has its charm and it depends on the individuality choice and thinking. Your one line in the article " Is this Entertaining ? Not for me " obviously for you madam this movie must be a weak script film but kindly correct me if i am wrong these movies do very well business in North and South regions and their collections are far-far more better than the parallel movies . I would also like to add that i am not an Akshay Kumar fan neither Prabhudeva's fan i am a fan of Entertaining movies.

I rewind myself to my childhood days where i went with my father to see movie " Himmatwala" in 1983 at Dreamland cinema and been my memory very good i recollect there was a large whistling sounds in whole theater when Jeetendra use to fight and dance. But now the time has changed since 2000 after these multiplexes have started coming in.

Bollywood means masala and today when i see movies like Dabaang , Wanted and Rowdy Rathore those days of 90's when action films were dominating the industry are been recollected. I would rather add that these movies gives only one thing Entertainment , Entertainment and Entertainment and we all need entertainment in our life after slogging for hours of hectic work lifestyle. Thats what i said every individual has its own thinking. Like i remember movie " Jaane tu yaa Jaane na " was given 4 stars by movie critics but when i saw that movie it gave me the same old essence of old Laila Majnu movies remixed in modern version ,the script was very weak and pathetic but only because it was of Aamir Khan's production critics gave 4 stars , i really sometime doubt that are these production houses are paying for giving better reviews?? might be my wrong perception. I am not saying that parallel films are boring but these films have a heavy subject which forces the audience to think and go deep into it. I am also being a big fan of Satyajit Ray , Sudhir Mishra , Anurag Basu , Gulzar Saheb and last but not the least Vishal Bhardwaj.

I have seen many movies like Ardhsatya (Your choice in 100 before you are out and i agree on this) , Shatranj Ke Khiladi , Mohan Joshi hazir Ho , Arth , Chashme badoor , Ek Ruka Hua faisla , Albert Pinto ko Gussa Kyon aata Hain , Salim Langde pe Mat Ro , Jaane Bhi do yaaron . I have seen many critics giving full marks to heavy subject films but i have a question that when there was a downfall in 90's of these heavy subjects films why there was a full marks given to masala films by critics ?? . Kindly correct me if i am wrong.

Madam for me Bollywood means Entertainment. Also i would like to add that movies with heavy subject have never survived for many weeks at theaters. I still remember though Dev D made a good business but it ran only for a week in theaters, No Smoking movie by Anurag Basu moved out in 4 days, Raat gayi baat gayi film by Saurabh Shukla moved out in one week. These movies were very good but there was no spice in it i mean entertainment. Madam our life (Audience) is very very busy with lots of stress and tensions and then if we go and see heavy movies it will only give us subject to think but not Entertainment.

Lastly once again i would really like to give you Thumbs Up for your column " 100 before you are out " and i would like to suggest one thing that kindly in future come up with a column " 100 Masala films of Bollywood " . I would be glad that whenever it is possible i would like to meet up with you and take some more knowledge of Bollywood which i am sure i must be missing somewhere.

Warm Regards
Kaizad D Patel

WHO ARE WE...

Few days back i was sitting with my one of the newly made friend and there were others too in a group. I was the only Parsi bawa in the group. The discussion went to the heels and deep when there was a question raised with a funny sense by one of the group member "Why you Bawas are like aliens"?? you guys are very less and cant be seen everywhere..You are like a rare found species now..the whole group was bursted into a laughter as if they are watching a comedy show.I was cool and calm coz i was knowing that these respected people in the group have a very limited knowledge about the Zoroastrian culture and are suffering from inevitable idiotic humor syndrome. I can see in their eyes a nutty sarcasm on pulling and making jokes of this culture traits. They started giving testimonies on the funny bawas cases they know. I was sitting relaxed and was not at all feeling humiliated or embarrassed also simultaneously i was feeling pity on them as they were behaving like a frogs been trapped into a muddy well for years.

The bartender brought couple of drinks and then the discussion went of road. After gulping down few more peg shots again me and my tradition was targeted as a topic for their laughing session. Still i was quite coz i was happy that atleast these people are relieving their hidden stress by making fun of the religion and culture about which they have a lack evidence. Finally i had to break my long tail silence not just to hit them by my words but to educate them on "WHO ARE WE".. We as an Indian respect all the cultures and their tradition. Then why do we make jokes on them about whom there is a less knowledge. I have seen many people cracking jokes on Sardars and on the other side they criticize the racism evolution in other countries. We are Zoroastrians but we are also an Indians. Many people have a wrong misconception that we Parsees always favored British. Then what about the freedom fighters like Dadabhoy Nowroji and Madam Cama who gave maximum contribution and were supporting the Mahatma. I started then explaining them about our history.

For three centuries after the Muslim conquest of Persia, Zoroastrianism remains of importance in the region. But gradually the majority of Persians convert to the religion of the new ruling caste, whether for reasons of conviction or convenience. A minority of Zoroastrians seek greater liberty elsewhere. They move to India, where they establish themselves in Gujarat as the Parsees (the Persian word for 'Persians').A few Zoroastrians remain in Iran, to be found even today in the remote desert cities of Yazd and Kerman. They have been known to Muslims until recently as gabar, probably a version of the Arabic kafir ('infidel').

After explaining about this a question raised "Why the hell you guys dont allow other religion people to enter into your temple"?? i only pointed out one answer that why they dont allow as an individual i also dont have a concreate answer to that as i am not a master in Avesta but if we see From the religious point of view, the custom is not unique to the Parsis only. A non-Muslim is not permitted to enter the holy city of Mecca in order to see the Ka'aba, nor a non- Hindu allowed into the inner precincts of certain temples in North and Sout h India. The Jagannathan temple in Orissa is a good example. Non-Christians are not allowed to enter the Coptic orthodox churches in Ethiopia and only a confirmed Catholic may partake of the Holy Communion. Similarly, non-Jews are forbidden to enter an orthodox Hessidic synagogue.

The discussion started getting heated when there was a case raised for an intercaste marriage. Any Parsi female getting married outside the community is considered to be a taboo. Every individual has right to make their own decision but there are other reasons as well for getting married outside the community. There is a very beautiful Article written by Mr Homi Ranina and there were various reasons pointed out on the same.

1)Housing shortage:
Dealing with the first point of housing shortage. the most important aspect which needs to be stressed is that this is a problem affecting every section of society in every part of India and, more so. in the metropolitan cities like Bombay. In other words, it is a general problem faced by every Indian citizen, specially those belonging to the poor and lower middle classes who cannot afford to pay for the cost of housing which has skyrocketted in recent years.

2)Inadequate Education of Parsi Boys
The second fallacy in the argument of most Parsis who marry outside the community is regarding the educational qualifications of Parsi boys. He have been awarding prizes through the auspices of the Zoroastrian Student Teacher Association, which also on its own awards prizes to students who get high marks right from the S.S.C., I.C.S.E., H.S.C. levels upto the graduation stage. We have enough documentary evidence to show that Parsi boys do as well in their studies as Parsi girls. In fact, some of the Parsi boys have done outstandingly well. It is, therefore, totally incorrect to say that Parsi boys do not educate themselves as well as Parsi girls do.

3)Love is blind
One of the primary causes of mixed marriages is the attitude of the Parsi spouse, to whom love for a person is more important than love either for the religion or even their own parents. In fact, in a vast majority of mixed marriages, the Parsi spouse married against the wishes of his or her parents. There have also been several cases of Parsis even giving up their religion just to marry a non-Parsi boy or girl. This only shows the callousness and indifference of some of our Parsis towards their religion and community.

Now the major point was on the population from where the topic began. I pointed out that though Parsees are less in population but the contribution to the country is major.Parsee community owns maximum land today in Mumbai with around 12-13 colonies and major industrialist contributions.Yaa the fact is true that there is a decline in the population but every decline has a valid reasons which the group was unaware. The
primary reason for non-marriages and late marriages is due to the concern of the young males and females to have an acceptable minimum standard of living for family
formation. As such, Parsis women are more concerned about their status and career. They are highly educated and work out side their homes. Marriage seems to be the second priority. Another peculiar feature of Parsi community is the lack of family or peer pressure to get married at a reasonable age.It is interesting to note that age at marriage among Parsi women is about 27 years and among men it is about 31 years. One out of 5 males and one out of 10 females remained single even by age 50 compared to almost universal marriages among the Indian populations.

Now the best part about it that the honorable trustees of the community are really working hard to solve the problem of the population decline. There are many matrimonial meets been organized every month to make sure that the boys and girls dont marry outside the community.Housing facility is been provided to needy couples so that they can plan their family life. For the foundation the family which has the second child the financial help of some amount is been provided. For the poor Parsi families milk fund and education books and fees support is provided. The community is rising like a star which was hidden behind the dark clouds. The parsees have establish their place not only in Business world but also in entertainment industry.

The discussion was ended on a note of silence when after that there was no more queries and jokes raised on this community. My Blog today has not given 100% detail about this community but here my initiative was throw some light about the Zoroastrian community. I am not being a racist nor i have criticize any culture or religion coz every religion is special and pious in its own way.I have also come across so many friends who are keen on knowing about this religion but not only Zoroastrianism but any religion to understand takes years and years.

CWG or Ind/Aus Cricket Series

From last so many days or weeks i guess i am reading in newspapers , Tv news Channels , Tweets from my friends , comments on facebook about CommonWealth Games. People making Humour on CWG also on Honourable Kalmadi. Media on the other side putting some spices and this has now become a hot topic for their increase in newspaper sales. Tv news channel showing everyday something different to gain TRP's. My Blog here is not about saying that it has created an irritation or everyone is now having same topic to speak and also i do agree that its a disgrace on our country's part.

Being an Indian i am ashamed and moreover the Indians who are staying abroad would be feeling more shameful. But again if we go back rewind years and years before there was a sport Hockey which is now no more our national game except on papers and in the text books of the school going kids. This is the country where there were examples given of Dhyanchand , Vishwanath Anand , Prakash Padukone , Milkha singh etc. But all these were not Cricketers each individual is and was a legend in different sports. I was surprised last week when i heard school going kids talking about happenings in Champions League and the name of the players they were talking about even i have never heard.

From all this point i can understand only one thing that today in India if any sport which is given importance and which is much much more in Limelight is only Cricket.Who cares who is winning a gold , silver or bronze medal. My few friends have shared some pictures of the CWG athelets Village and it was pathetic. The room where the sportsman are going to reside..i have no words to say for it. But lets go little ahead from New Delhi to Chandigarh and if we click the pics of the Hotel rooms where there is Australian Cricket Team has put up then you would say wowww.It would be a president suites. Thanks to sponsors..

No parents will tell their child to take up a sports profession if it is not a cricket and ofcourse in India there are no footballers like Messi , Beckham , Drogba , Kaka who are born yet even if we look football is only played much in local schools and a Salgoancar club in Goa. The most important thing that after few months there would be a Cricket World cup 2011 in Asia and that time the media and public has to see the arrangements , ofcourse Mr Pawar would be personally involved being a president of NCP and also of ICC..Applause..

I am trying to deliver only one message through my blog , that India is not a country for other sports its only for one sport that is Cricket coz there is more of money , shine and five star lifestyle the players sell themselves for huge chunk of money. I would hope that one day comes that our young generation would also look at other sports and they would give examples of all those legends whose names i mentioned. I also hope that CWG go well and our Ministry keeps retained the pride of our country.

Art Films are Boring , Idiotic and Time Consuming

On a good old sunday afternoon , after a heavy lunch brunch bought up a good DVD and thought of spending my lovely afternoon by watching it... Suddenly after a few minutes of the movie started i was surrounded with a gallons of criticism and comments that i am watching something unrealistic , unauthentic and useless chunk. It was not any typical bollywood movie but it was an Art Film which i was glaring into with full attention.

I am not here to debate or prove some point that only because i have a flair for the Art Films everyone should have , but as said by one of my colleague last week its really unfair to call it Art Films . The real term should be the " Real Film" coz Art films are more routed to our culture and they are depicted to the real life today. In other words " REAL CINEMA" .

But my article doesn't break here . Art Films are boring.. Everyone today knows about the typical bollywood cinema. Hero dancing along with heroine in a fascinating gardens , killing 25 goons in one shot , singing songs and in the end lives happily ever after. Nobody is to be blamed for enjoying this fantasy coz a common man anyways have a lots of problem , he is running everyday and travelling in a claustrophobic compartments and is definetly busy with upholding his day to day responsiblities and when he is given a virtual tour to the alps of Switzerland in just few bucks he wont be bored. But when we talk about Real Cinema.. I would define it , Art Films they give us a message about whats happening in our daliy life its a reflection of ours what we see through it . But still Real Cinema is BORING coz it does't give you a scenic tour of Amsterdam.

When we talk about Real Cinema , it is the cinema where there is an existence of talented , gifted and genius filmmakers...Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Bimal Roy, V. Shantaram, Chetan Anand, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shyam Benegal, Jahnu Barua, Ismail Merchant. These filmmakers tried to promote realism in their own different styles, though many of them often accepted certain conventions of popular cinema.Real cinema of this time gave careers to a whole new breed of young actors, including Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Amol Palekar, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Pankaj Kapoor. Many movies from a real cinema has given a great value to the Indian Film Industry. NFDC one of the producers of the Real Cinematic movies like Pestonjee , Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro , Ek Doctor Ki Maut , Mirch Masala , Party , Dharavi , Massey saheb and many more.

Expressions and acting from the bottom of the heart , seriousness and conscience kept by all the actors of the Real Cinema are all idiotic , funny and are Oppressive..Why??? only because it depicts to the real life struggle. I still remember one of the authentic movie made on the struggle of a common man against a builder who try's to grab his house for making his business shine "Mohan Joshi Haazir ho" . Movies like "Junoon" potraying on 1857 revolutionary period. " Ardh Satya" fight of a cop against the corruption. " In Custody - Muhafiz" death of a Urdu language. The subjects what we had here were on real reel of life . Again here there is no criticism for other movies. Real cinemas you cannot fault them for stories. So when i term, its called as an Idiotic only because its not like movies like " Dil Chahta Hai" where the story is of three rich brats with no tensions in their life and only concern about doing lovydovy...like we call straight from Archies comics.

1980's were the time where Parallel cinema (Real Cinema) took a peak .. "Jaane bhi do Yaaron"one of the best made sarcastic film in the history of Indian Cinema very popular with cinegoers and also with masses and elites.

I remember a movie called " A Journey" , one of the movie by Harish Saluja ... "Ohhh man this movie is time consuming" this was one of the comment which i heard from the backseat from a gentlemen. The movie was only of 2 hrs with a 10 mins of Intermission.. Only because there was no item song , absence of chicks dancing in bikini's made it time consuming..Afterall its a Real Cinema..who wants to apply his brains and see the depth afterall!!!.. But parallely when we talk about movies like " Jodha Akbar " , " Salaam-e-Ishq " which runs for 4 hrs and only because it has chocolate cute hero's and stars its not a Time consuming , coz again a virtual tour of fantasy for 4 hrs who would mind.. In other lines its called Escapist cinema...

At the end of the day to each his own one can be intoxicated on Desi Boose (Tharra) and also on drinking scotch.. Real Cinema (Art Films) are acquired taste.. Any Tom , dick or Harry can see or enjoy commercial films , but all you need is a mind and more important to appreciated the beauty of "REAL CINEMA"... A beautiful lines to say " Sachai Chhup Nahi Sakti Banawat Ke Ausolon Say Ke Khushbo Aa Nahi Sakti Kahbi Kaghaz Ke Pholon Say "..
